This trail was recommended to me by a visitor to my site ! New hiking and mountain biking trails have been added in the Sylamore District so contact the district office for more information.
Location: The Eastern Trailhead is near Allison just off Arkansas Hwy. 14, 1/2-mile west of the junction with Hwys 14 & 5 at the community of Allison.
Distance: 15-miles, oneway, trending SE to NW from the Allison Trailhead and ending at the Barkshed Recreation Area.
Water: Water is available at the established campgrounds at the Blanchard Recreation Area and at the Gunner Pool Recreation Area. All other water sources from streams or springs should be filtered, treated, or boiled.
Parking: Parking is available at the four trailheads at Allison, Blanchard, Gunner Pool, and Barkshed.
Comments: On the North Sylamore Hiking Trail, you'll find a variety of scenery beside Sylamore Creek, over rugged bluffs, through cedar glades, and old homeplaces. Scenery is outstanding throughout the year. The trail travels beside the creek for fifteen miles from Allison to Barkshed. The trail varies from the creek bottoms to the bluff tops along the 15-miles. The trail is open to foot travel only. Primitive camping is allowed anywhere outside of designated recreation areas and wildlife food plots. There are developed campsites available at Blanchard, Gunner Pool, and Barkshed, but none at Allison. Camping at Allison is limited to the bulletin board side of the fence; the other side is pastureland. No permits are required for hiking/backpacking. You are sure to enjoy the waterfalls at Slick Rock Hollow, the fern beds and numerous scenic bluffs along the trail.
Maps: A trail map can be obtained by calling the Sylamore Ranger District (870) 269-3228 or writing P.O. Box 1279, Hwy 14 North, Mountain View, AR 72560. The map furnished by the Ranger District shows the trail superimposed on a piece of a quad sheet but the quad(s) are not identified.
Cautions: Heat, humidity, ticks, snakes, poison ivy, and possible lack of water in the summer months. Extreme caution should be taken when the stream is in flood stage. Respect the areas of private land that fall within the National Forest.
